Proper storage and handling of research peptides is critical for maintaining compound integrity and ensuring experimental reproducibility. Degraded or improperly stored peptides can produce unreliable results that compromise research outcomes.
Lyophilized Peptide Storage
Undissolved lyophilized peptides should be stored at -4°F or colder in their original sealed containers. At these temperatures, most lyophilized peptides remain stable for extended periods. Protect from light exposure and moisture, both of which can accelerate degradation. Keep containers sealed until ready for use.
Dissolution Best Practices
Solvent choice follows the solubility profile of the sequence; hydrophobic or highly basic sequences often require an organic co-solvent or a pH-adjusted buffer. Solvent is introduced along the vial wall rather than onto the lyophilized cake, and dissolution is allowed to proceed unassisted — vigorous vortexing promotes aggregation and denaturation, which alters the analytical profile of the sample. Gentle swirling is sufficient.
Storage of Peptides in Solution
Once dissolved, store peptide solutions at 36-46°F (standard refrigerator temperature) and discard after 30 days. Limit freeze-thaw cycles to no more than three, as each cycle degrades the sample. Splitting the stock into individual aliquots avoids repeated warming of the full volume over a long study.
